Granite Bay defeated Pleasant Grove 30-24 in a thrilling Sac-Joaquin Section Division I championship game at Hornet Field on the campus of Sacramento State on Saturday afternoon on a wind-swept day.
The Big Three for The Grizzlies (12-2), who won the Section title for the first time since 2007, anticipated a title run this season with quarterback Brendan Keeney, WR Spencer Blair and defensive end Gavin Andrews keying the victory. Briare was the KBC Sports Player of the Game with two touchdown catches from Keeney. Keeney completed 13-19 passes for 136 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions.
Arik Bird rushed for 166 yards on 27 carries for the Grizzlies and had scoring runs of 6 and 38 yards. His 38-yard effort with 4:19 left put the Grizzlies ahead to stay, and his hard running down the stretch iced it as Granite Bay elected to take a knee to run it out deep inside Pleasant Grove territory.
