The Lincoln Hornets had no answer offensively against the #1 defense in the San Diego Section, as Cathedral Catholic won their 8th straight contest in a 45-0 shutout in Division III quarterfinal action on Friday night.
Lincoln (2-9-1) snuck into the playoffs this year with one regular season victory, but beat Ramona soundly 34-7 in the opening round. However, the power running attack and stifling defense of the Dons, who allowed a paltry 8.5 points per game this year, was too much for their Eastern League rival, and the Hornets were unable to get on the scoreboard.
Don RB J.J. Stavola started the night’s scoring with a 3-yard TD run on the Dons’ first possession. Not long afterward, QB Garrett Bogart found a wide open TE Andrew Pascale down the middle of the field and connected on a 48-yard TD pass. In the second quarter, Stavola would find the endzone again on a 5-yard scoring run. Christian Fanning would add a 40-yard FG, giving Cathedral Catholic a 24-0 lead going into halftime.
The third quarter was a near carbon-copy of the first quarter, as J.J. Stavola ran in his third TD of the night from five yards out. Then TE Andrew Pascale hooked-up again with QB Bogart on the identical scoring play from the first quarter; this time going for 45-yards and a TD. WB Riley Sanchez would add a 15-yard TD run in the fourth quarter, giving the Don's a dominating 45-0 victory.
With the win, Cathedral Catholic improves to 10-1, and will host Point Loma in a Division III semifinal next Thursday night. NOTE: #2 Seed St. Augustine was upset by Mar Vista (42-28), leaving that side of the Division III bracket wide open. Mar Vista will take on Olympian in the other semi-final match-up.
