The Valhalla Norsemen advanced to the second round of the CIF San Diego Section playoffs after holding off a feisty Rancho Bernardo team on Friday night. The Norsemen dominated the first three quarters, before the Broncos would storm back and make things interesting. Valhalla was able to hang on and secure a 27-21 victory.

After two long touchdown passes from Frank Foster to Jevon Hasten that opened up a 20-0 lead, it looked like Valhalla would cruise to a victory. Then along came the 4th quarter.

After a long scoring drive by Rancho Bernardo to bring the score to 27-14 with just under five minutes to play, it looked like Valhalla would just try to run the clock out. However, Foster threw an interception while trying to set up a safe screen pass, and the Broncos would capitalize on the turnover to bring the score to 27-21.  Valhalla was able to secure possession on the ensuing onside kick attempt to hold on for the victory.

Valhalla will travel up to Oceanside to take on Oceanside High School in round two. As the #3 seed, the Pirates had a bye in the first round. Meanwhile, Rancho Bernardo closes its season with a 5-6 record.
